Who Needs a Bhutan Tourist Visa?

Most international visitors require a Bhutan tourist visa before travelling.

Indian nationals follow a separate entry process and require an entry permit rather than a tourist visa. Bangladeshi and Maldivian nationals are subject to different visa requirements and procedures from other international visitors. Entry requirements, fees, and application procedures may change, so we confirm the latest requirements when planning your trip.

If you are unsure which process applies to you, Phuentshok Tours & Treks can confirm the current requirements based on your nationality, travel dates, and itinerary, and assist with the necessary visa or permit arrangements before your Bhutan Experiences™ journey.

If you are still planning your trip, our How to Book a Bhutan Tour guide explains the complete process from enquiry to arrival.

The current Bhutan tourist visa fee is USD 40 per person

This is a one-time visa application fee. It is separate from the Sustainable Development Fee.

The visa or permit can be applied online, and travellers may apply directly or through a tourism service provider. Bhutan’s official tourism and immigration websites state that tour operators or hotels can apply on behalf of travellers.

The Sustainable Development Fee, commonly called the SDF, is a daily government fee paid by visitors to Bhutan. It supports Bhutan’s responsible tourism model and helps protect the country’s environment, culture, heritage, communities, and visitor experience.

Traveller Type

Current SDF Rate

International adults

USD 100 per person per night

Children aged 6–12

USD 50 per child per night

Children aged 5 and below

No SDF

Indian nationals

INR 1,200 per person per night

Understanding the SDF is also helpful when estimating your overall Bhutan Travel Cost.

The SDF is calculated by the number of nights you stay in Bhutan.

Example

1 adult staying 7 nights:
USD 100 × 7 nights = USD 700 SDF

2 adults staying 7 nights:
USD 100 × 7 nights × 2 travellers = USD 1,400 SDF

The SDF is not the same as your tour cost. It is an official government fee and is normally shown separately in your quotation.

For a Bhutan tourist visa or permit, you will generally need:

  • Clear passport copy
  • Recent passport-size photo
  • Passport valid for at least 6 months from your intended departure date from Bhutan
  • Valid travel insurance
  • Confirmed travel dates
  • Basic itinerary details

Bhutan’s Department of Immigration lists passport copy, recent passport photo, minimum six-month passport validity from the intended departure date, valid travel insurance, and possible additional documents as requirements for tourist e-visa or e-permit applications.

Before applying, many travellers also review our Best Time to Visit Bhutan guide to help finalize their travel dates.
